Landscaping Mulch

There are many reasons why adding mulch to the landscape is important.  The most important reason is the proper mulch will help keep the weeds from growing.  Weeds can kill the plants by taking up all the nutrients in the soil that the plants need to grow.   In addition, mulch helps keep the soil at the right temperature and keep it moist, which will help the plants stay healthy.

When it comes to mulch these days, you have a couple option as far as color. You will notice that there are mulch in the color of black, red, gold, brown, and other natural shades.  These mulch with different color are dyed mulch.  These mulch are made from chipped hardwood that has been dyed.  There’s a reason why they are dyed and it’s because dyed mulch last longer than natural hardwood mulch.  With natural hardwood mulch, they tend to fade to the color of dull gray in a few years. On the other hand, dyed mulch will retain its rich color for many years.

Hardwoods are not the only tree that are used for mulch.  Another type of tree popular with mulch products is pine tree.  Some of the products from pine tree are pine bark, pine straw, and pine bark nuggets. They are great for insulating the soil in the summer and winter, but in the spring they will need to be removed and replace with new mulch.  This is why some people prefer not to use these types of woods at all.

Beside trees being used as mulch, there are mulch in the form of stone, plastic, hay and straws.  Stone mulch are used around trees, cacti and succulents than for a garden.  As for plastic, hays and straws mulch, they are more used during the winter season due to its insulation potential.  Their materials are able let oxygen moves freely into the soil while protecting the soil from freezing.
